1. Spare tire. Remember the last time you got a flat and you threw the damaged tire back into your trunk? Make sure you replaced it with a new and fully functioning spare. Of course you will also need the tire jack and tire iron to make changing the spare possible.

2. Jumper cables. You can end up with a dead battery when you least expect it. Always have cables on hand and know how to use them. There is also the option to have a battery booster so you can recharge that battery without the help of another vehicle.

3. Paperwork. In the glove compartment you should already have your car’s manual, repair information such as the number for AAA if you are a member, car insurance forms and the number for your preferred repair shop.

4. Emergency supplies. This is a large category in itself. You can end up stranded in any weather at any time of day for an unknown amount of time. It is crucial to have a few necessary items to ensure your safety.

  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Water bottles
  • Granola bars, nuts, or other fulfilling packaged snacks
  • Flares and reflective triangle
  • Maps
  • Ice scraper
  • Heavy wool blanket
  • Change of clothes in case yours got wet and you are stuck in cold temperatures
  • Phone charger

Of course there are other items you may prefer to have in your vehicle, or some of these you feel you could do without. But it is important to be as prepared as possible in case you find yourself in an emergency situation.
